San Diego Comic-Con 2016 --AND-- Elements: Fire Anthology!

Hi all,

It's been, well, more than a minute. It's been closer to an hour or something, I think? Anywho, I've got great news!

I'll be at San Diego Comic-Con again this year, signing copies of Nutmeg (the coming-of-age culinary crime comic I do with Jackie Crofts and Josh Eckert) at the Action Lab booth (#1735) for a good chunk of that time. (Stay tuned for exact times once I know them!) And when I'm not there I'll be wandering the show floor, attending panels, and hitting up the Secret Taco Truck™. Plus, on Saturday night, I'll be at (on?) the Action Lab panel in room 28DE from 7-8pm. Come by and check it out and see some other great creators talk about their great books!

The OTHER great news is the Elements: Fire Anthology, edited by my friend Taneka Stotts (with assists from Shing Yin Khor). The Elements anthology is a series of short comics stories by creators of color, all centered on the theme of Fire. I did a short in the anthology with the incredible Rashad Doucet, and we can't wait for you to see it. How will you see it? By backing the Kickstarter, of course! That's right, there's still time left to pledge for a copy of the book, and we've already surpassed our goal, so you can bet that the book will happen and be in your hands later this year. So, what are you waiting for?!

Emerald City Comicon 2016!

It is almost upon us! Jackie, Josh, and I had so much fun in Seattle last year for ECCC and this year looks like it will be even better. Jackie and I will be there all weekend, from Thursday, April 7 - Sunday, April 10, at TABLE U-10 IN ARTISTS' ALLEY. Whereas last year we only had the first issue of our coming-of-age culinary crime comic, Nutmeg, this year we've got TWO trade paperback volumes (collecting issues 1-3 and 4-6, respectively), a newly released 7th issue, AND a new convention-exclusive variant of issue #1 by our friend Kevin Olvera.

So come check us out at the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle next week for some fun, some comics, and much more!

WonderCon 2016!

Hi All!

This weekend (March 25-27) is WonderCon at the Convention Center in downtown L.A. and I will be there all three days with copies of Nutmeg, the culinary coming-of-age crime comic I do with Jackie Crofts and Josh Eckert! (I may have some other surprises as well.) If you're at the show, please drop by my table--J-30 in Artists' Alley--and say hello, browse, ask questions, grab a handful of pastel M&Ms... It'll be a good time. Can't wait to see you there!

2016 Convention Update!

We're now into 2016 and Comic Convention Season is heating up! With that in mind, I wanted to send an quick update on the conventions I've got lined up for this year. As ever, these are subject to change, but I'll be on top of letting folks know if that happens.

  • March 25-27: WonderCon (L.A. Convention Center) - My first show of the year, and my third time exhibiting. This is always a lot of fun, and this year will be even more so as I'll have the first two trade paperbacks of Nutmeg with me as well as some other goodies. The new venue for the show should mean some new faces, too. You can find me at J30 in Artists' Alley.

  • April 7-10: Emerald City Comicon (Seattle, WA) - Jackie Crofts, Josh Eckert, and I had a blast last year at our first convention with our book officially at Action Lab Entertainment. Everyone was very warm and receptive, and Seattle was great. We'll be stationed at Booth U10 in Artists' Alley this year, so come on by! We can't wait to go back up north.

  • May 14-15: TCAF aka Toronto Comic Arts Festival (Toronto, ON) - I've only been to T Dot once, but it was great, and being able to experience THE comic convention there will be immense. Both Jackie and I will be there for our first international comic convention both as attendees and exhibitors. Everything we've heard about this show is great, and we're super excited to be attending. (Note: While Jackie and I are going to be in attendance with Nutmeg, the table is listed under my name.)

  • May 21-22: VanCAF aka Vancouver Comic Arts Festival (Vancouver, BC) - You read that right: back-to-back trips to Canada on back-to-back weekends. Vancouver is said to be beautiful and I imagine that will hold true in mid-May. Heard very good things about this show, and a couple friends will be there, and I'll be joining them on a panel it looks like! I'm about as nervous as can be.

  • July 20-24: San Diego Comic-Con (San Diego, CA) - This one is still a bit tentative due to the day job, but it's looking pretty likely it will happen. If it does, you can bet I'll be signing at the Action Lab booth again this year. We're hoping to get Jackie to come out as well, as we had a blast last year (and a lot of fish tacos), and I know a second year under our belts will be even better.

As I get more info about these and other shows, I'll pass them along!

Nutmeg #7: Spice Racketeers

In less than two weeks--Wednesday, March 23rd, to be exact--Nutmeg #7, "Spice Racketeers," drops in fine comic shops (almost) everywhere. It's been a little while since we last saw Poppy, Cassia, Saffron, Marjorie, Anise, and Ginger, and boy have they all been busy. Issue 7 kicks off the Winter arc, and to quote Lauryn Hill, "Seasons change, mad things rearrange." Fittingly, this is where things start to take a serious turn for everyone involved and by the end of this arc, there may be a new queen bee atop the throne.

Nutmeg Vol. 2 - Late Fall: Brownie Points

This Wednesday, December 9th sees the release of the second volume of Nutmeg, "Late Fall: Brownie Points," which collects issues 4-6 of the series. With this trade paperback, series protagonists Poppy and Cassia get into the nitty-gritty of their brownie-baking empire and begin to build something special. But there's trouble brewing and it's closer to home than anyone could have expected.

Also, with this volume, we bring in our friend Josh Eckert as the new series colorist and letterer.

We hope you dig what we've got cooking!

Nutmeg #5

This coming Wednesday, October 21st, Nutmeg #5, "Pantry Raids," drops in comic shops! Here is where everything gets kicked up several degrees, ahem, as Poppy and Cassia sample their own Patty Cake brownies... And nothing is ever the same again.

Convention-eering!

A quick update on convention stuff for the rest of this year and the first half of 2016:

  • October 31, 2015: Comikaze Expo (L.A. Convention Center) - I should be here on a panel with the rest of the Southern California contingent of Action Lab Entertainment talking about our creator-owned work at the publisher. I say "should" because it will depend on if I get that Saturday off of work or not, though it looks likely. No table or booth presence this year, though.

  • March 27-29, 2016: WonderCon (L.A. Convention Center) - Submitted my application for this show just the other day. Hopefully I'll get in because it was a good time this year and next year looks to be even better. A new venue for the show could bring in a lot of new faces, too. If all goes to plan, I'll have a table here with plenty of Nutmeg goodness for you.

  • April 7-10, 2016: Emerald City Comicon (Seattle, WA) - Jackie Crofts, Josh Eckert, and I had a blast this year at our first convention with our book officially at Action Lab Entertainment. Everyone was very warm and receptive, and Seattle was great. We've been accepted to Artists' Alley and got our hotel locked down as well, so next step is getting flights. Can't wait to go back up north!

  • April 28-May 1, 2016: Calgary Expo (Calgary, AB) - My good friend Teika Hudson lives up in Calgary with her family, and she's come down to SoCal for San Diego Comic-Con twice now, but I've never been up there. From what she says, this show is a really good one, and I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring for it. I completely botched the application date, so it's a waitlist for me. Also, I'm pretty sure that's the same weekend as the NFL Draft, so getting those days off work is highly unlikely. Still, stranger things have happened.

  • May 14-15, 2016: TCAF aka Toronto Comic Arts Festival (Toronto, ON) - I've only been to T Dot once, but it was great, and being able to experience THE comic convention there would be immense. This is our second time applying to the show, so fingers crossed that we get in. The word is that it's a great show, and we'd love to see that first-hand.

  • May 21-22, 2016: VanCAF aka Vancouver Comic Arts Festival (Vancouver, BC) - If Calgary and TCAF don't happen, there's always VanCAF for my first Canadian comic convention opportunity. Heard very good things about this show, and a couple friends will be there paneling and such, so I hope I can make it! Applied only just the other day, so no word yet.

As I get more info about these and other shows, I'll pass them along!

Aaaand, before I forget, the fourth issue of Nutmeg, "The Bake Sale," will be in comic shops next Wednesday! (That's September 16th!) Which is fantastic news.

Even better news? This weekend--September 11-13--Comixology is having a 50% off sale on all Action Lab Entertainment titles, including Nutmeg, so if you've been on the fence or waiting to check out our culinary coming-of-age crime comic... wait no longer! It's a great time to check it out!

TCAF 2016 (Hopefully)

TCAF2016.jpg

Well, it's off! Fingers crossed that 2016 will be the year we get accepted to the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. This year wasn't, but, you know, dust yourself and all of that jazz. Wish us luck!

Long Beach Comic Con

That's right! This Saturday, September 12th, at Long Beach Comic Con, I'll be joining the rest of the Southern California contingent of Action Lab Entertainment to talk about our books, creator-owned work, and when we can expect a crossover between Nutmeg and Holy F*ck. Or Nutmeg and Aero-Girl. Everyone on the panel is good people, and I can't wait to be in the same room as these knuckleheads on Saturday. You should definitely drop by if you can!
